Mnemosyne
i think some memories are kept close to the heart,
that they shine and remain untouched.
every sensation still as vivid as the moment it happened.
the sun beating down on your pores,
the wind gently billowing through cloth,
a touch of a hand, a smirk of a smile.
but most memories are kept in the head,
jumbled and mixed up, pulled apart and repaired.
most memories don’t come back the same,
as if a book pulled from the shelf
rearranged its chapters every time you read it.
not all memories must persist.
not all memories are meant to last.
what’s worth remembering will be remembered,
the rest is to be recalled, repaired,
and eventually, replaced.
what has left is not meant to exist.
what is gone is not to be lost.
from the ruins, one can build anew.
forgetting is not to forsake.
some memories you thought would last forever,
but don’t even last past midnight.
sometimes clouds are just smoke in the sky,
here for a moment, gone in a second.
there’s something about you that now i can’t remember.
but perhaps there was never something to begin with.
